Work Experience Placement

Our Active Communities team use the power of physical activity and sport to help those in need improve their health and wellbeing. We have a range of programmes to support you in gaining experience in the public health and leisure industry. 


We caught up with one of our volunteers from the Student Placement programme, who said the following about volunteering with Active Communities:

"My experience with the Active Communities team was very rewarding. The progress that can be seen in a participant, over just a few weeks, can provide you with a great sense of achievement. I feel a lot more confident in myself - it was daunting for me at first as I had never taken on such an independent role before. As it turned out, this was exactly what I needed. The experience really set me up for my 4th year studying psychology at university"

Research Based

Work alongside our project teams to assist with evaluation and/or physical activity assessments with participants from a range of programmes. Please specify this option in your application. 

Fit for Health

Support our qualified instructors to lead indoor classes for people living with long term health conditions. Help them manage their symptoms and live better through physical activity. 

Get Fit for Surgery (PREHAB)

Work alongside our experienced instructor to assist people awaiting elective hip/knee surgery with their physical activity journey to gain strength and improve their overall fitness. 

Get Active

Support trained instructors to lead a range of low-level, indoor classes, which are ideal for those who are new to, or returning to being active.

Movement for Memories

Supporting people living with dementia by acting as an activity buddy. Dementia awareness and role specific training will be provided. We ask that volunteers commit whenever possible to one session each week for approximately two hours. Locations vary across the city. 

Steady Steps

Assist a specialist instructor to lead indoor classes that support those who have had or are at risk of having a fall through strength and balance exercises. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two hours each week.
