Wall of Honourees at Meadowbank
The search has begun for additional names to be added to the Wall of Honour at the Meadowbank Sports Centre as nominations open today (Monday 7 October). When the new Meadowbank Sport Centre opened in 2022 a space within the atrium in the building was reserved to honour members of the public who made significant contributions to Meadowbank’s past and legacy as a sport venue and community facility. Over 45 people were honoured in the original Wall of Honour, and included sporting heroes Chris Hoy, Lynsey Sharp, Allan Wells and Josh Kerr and sport coaches such as gymnastic coach Maggie Bissett and athletics coach Bill Walker. Nominations must have a connection with Meadowbank and can be made in four categories:
Communities, teams and individuals across Edinburgh have 11 weeks to submit nominations for the Wall before the deadline of Friday 20 December. Final decisions will then be made by a selection panel. Councillor Val Walker, Culture and Communities Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, said: The Wall of Honour is a wonderful way for our citizens to pay a lasting tribute to the Meadowbank legacy and to some of the outstanding individuals who make a positive impact on sport in the capital and gained national and international recognition for Edinburgh. We’re really keen for those who have made a positive difference to their community at Meadowbank to be recognised and want to hear stories about who has inspired over the years and deserves to be recognised and celebrated for years to come. Please help us celebrate the people of Edinburgh’s achievements by proposing a nominee now. Jen Holland, CEO of Edinburgh Leisure said: Since reopening in July 2022, Meadowbank continues to play a significant role in the lives of so many individuals. We are proud to be custodian of this magnificent asset and support the continued celebration of Meadowbank’s rich history, the many events that took place, the sporting achievements and people that made up the fabric of this iconic building. The Wall of Honour is a lasting tribute to those who have made remarkable contributions—whether through sporting excellence, community service, or professional dedication. As nominations open, we encourage everyone to share the stories of those who have helped shape the spirit of Meadowbank, ensuring their impact is recognised for generations to come. Nominations can be made online through the Council's Consultation Hub and must be received no later than Friday 20 December. |
