“I’m a single parent and I rely on benefits to get by. I work part time around my daughter’s school hours and
don’t have much time for myself or much money left over for treats like fitness memberships.
Since getting the £10 Get Active Card, I’ve been able to go to the gym when I’m not working,
and it has really helped me to feel better about myself.”

Poverty and barriers to physical activity in Edinburgh
Many people experiencing poverty face barriers to living an active and healthy life.
Cost is undoubtably one of the biggest hurdles that prevents people on low incomes from being active.
Yet, physical activity is one of the best things we can do for our health, wellbeing, and quality of life.
At Edinburgh Leisure, we provide a range of support to help people living on a low income to be active with us.
How Edinburgh Leisure supports people affected by poverty
Edinburgh Leisure addresses these challenges through our Active Communities Programme, which aims to make physical activity accessible to everyone, especially those affected by poverty and health inequalities.
Each year we provide support to improve the lives of around 12,000 people who face the greatest barriers to being active, including those affected by health conditions, disabilities, inequalities, and poverty.
Our Community Access Program (CAP) is one of the ways we help people living on low incomes to be active. CAP includes:
- Our Get Active Card, which offers people living on a low income off-peak access to Edinburgh Leisure facilities for £10/month.
- Our Junior Membership, which gives under 18s access to all our gyms, pools, fitness classes, golf courses & climbing arena for £14.99/month.
- Our Carer’s Card, which allows a carer to book into an activity alongside an Edinburgh Leisure customer at no additional cost to the carer.
Help us help more people living on low incomes to be active
Essential programs like CAP are partially funded by the City of Edinburgh Council but benefit from additional support from people like you!
