Ageing Well

We’re so happy to be back and delivering some of the Ageing Well activities we love. Like everyone, we’ve had to adapt for COVID-19. Things might be a little different and not all of our activities will be starting immediately, but our friendly team of staff and volunteers are here to welcome you back and help you stay active with us in an enjoyable, but most of all safe, environment.

The Ageing Well Project run by Edinburgh Leisure in partnership with NHS Lothian, delivers a range of city-wide activities which support people to become, and remain, active in later life.

The emphasis is on meeting new people and making physical activity accessible and enjoyable. All Ageing Well activities are subsidised with voluntary contributions starting from as little as £1.

Ageing Well activities have been developed to cater for a wide range of tastes and abilities and all activities are either led by or supported by fully trained volunteers, who are all older adults themselves.

The Ageing Well project helps over 400 older adults to be active each week, through a range of options including walking, cycling, seated yoga, gardening, dancing, new age kurling and swimming.

Ageing Well relies on external funding and donations to continue supporting older adults in Edinburgh to stay active and connected in later life. To enable us to be there for more older adults, you can text a donation or donate online:

Please click on the links below for more information on those donation methods:

Our programme relies on the generous support of volunteers – older adults who give up 1 or 2 hours a week to help and support other older adults to get or stay active.

It’s not just Ageing Well who benefit from your gift of time. Volunteers say that they develop deeper connections within their communities, feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally; and are better able to manage health conditions such as stress.

In 2018 the Ageing Well programme was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS), which is the highest award given to UK volunteer groups and is the equivalent of an MBE. The award reflects the tremendous contribution of our Ageing Well volunteers and the positive difference they make to the lives of our participants.

We have a range of volunteering opportunities available within our programme, and we provide full training.

If you would like to join our friendly and sociable team of volunteers and keep Edinburgh moving, click here to apply or get in touch with us if you have any questions or queries relating to volunteering.
