10 Reasons to Choose Meadowbank Sports Centre for Your Next Big Event

Edinburgh Leisure has long been synonymous with excellent sports facilities and a vibrant array of community programmes. But what you might not know is that our venues, including the stunning new Meadowbank Sports Centre, are also the perfect setting for hosting memorable events, meetings, and even film shoots. In this blog post, we'll unveil 10 compelling reasons why you should consider Meadowbank Sports Centre for your next big event.

1) Versatile and Welcoming:

Meadowbank, like many of Edinburgh Leisure's venues, is known for its spacious, versatile, and multi-purpose design. This flexibility provides you with a blank canvas to mould your event or meeting to your specific needs. Our passionate and caring staff will go above and beyond to ensure the success of your event.

2) Historic Significance:

The original Meadowbank Stadium, built for the 1970s Commonwealth Games, holds a special place in sports history. It hosted the Games twice, in 1970 and 1986, making it the first venue in history to do so. Throughout the years, it welcomed numerous memorable sporting and music events, with the final performance by Elton John in 2016.

3) State-of-the-Art Facilities:

The new Meadowbank, reopened in July 2022, boasts a range of top-notch amenities, including three sports halls, a purpose-built DOJO, indoor and outdoor athletics facilities, a grade bronze stadium pitch, and a high-quality 3G pitch. Additionally, there is a deluxe hospitality suite, judges and press room, boxing hall, squash courts, a state-of-the-art gym, modern fitness studios, a cycle studio, and a vibrant café. With on-site parking, bike racks, and easy access to public transportation, it's a convenient choice.

4) Hall 1: A Spacious Venue:

Meadowbank's largest hall, equivalent to the size of eight badminton courts, offers the perfect space for a variety of sports and unique set-ups. A few examples from this year include a weekend-long Wedding Fair, Roller Disco, and a televised Wasserman Boxing Event on Channel 5 – a testament to the space’s versatility. Coming up, Hall 1 will host the Edinburgh Pickleball Festival on November 4th, and in December 2023, it will welcome the Scottish Open Snooker, televised by Eurosport and discovery+.

5) Hall 2: Elevated Seating:

Meadowbank's second-largest hall, Hall 2, features elevated spectator seating, making it ideal for sports events and breakout areas. The proximity to Hall 3, with a connecting shutter door, offers flexibility in event planning. This hall has seen some more unique events such as UK Cube Association Rubix Cube competition and a Grappling Industries tournament.

6) Hall 3: A Unique Blank Canvas:

Hall 3 at Meadowbank is a distinctive mirrored space with no floor markings. This makes it an ideal choice for meetings, events, conferences, or unique sporting activities such as fencing and dance. It can also be set up as a meeting space with AV equipment and accommodates up to 101 people.

7) The DOJO:

Meadowbank's purpose-built DOJO features padded walls and protective mats, is perfect for martial arts activities.

8) Outdoor Athletics Area:

The outdoor athletics area has a stadium pitch, with seating for 499 people including wheelchair users, which is used for football league matches, is SFA approved and rated grade bronze.  There is also a second caged 3G pitch that can be used for training and 11-a-side-matches.

In November, our 3G pitch has been hired for a weekend quadball event. Originally known as “quidditch”, it was invented in 2005 in the United States and taking direct influence from J.K.Rowling’s iconic series, the sport had a runaway success and has quickly grown across the world.

The Outdoor Athletics area is used for a multitude of sports, such as 400m track, hurdles, long jump, pole vault, high jump. There is also a grass area with a throws cage for hammer, discus, and javelin.

9) Deluxe Hospitality Suite: a versatile space

Meadowbank Sports Centre's Hospitality Suite offers a deluxe meeting room with stunning views of the stadium pitch and outdoor athletics track. It's versatile, accommodating up to 105 people in various seating and standing arrangements, and is equipped with AV equipment, including an LCD projection and a screen.

10) Judges and Press Room:

Ideal for football press talks and television press teams, Meadowbank's Judges and Press Room can accommodate up to 30 people, including wheelchair users. It's perfect for media-related activities.

Meadowbank Sports Centre offers a wealth of opportunities for your next big event, meeting, or conference.
